Alex Steer is an analyst at New Philanthropy Capital, a charity that does research and consultancy to make the charitable sector more effective and to help people make more informed about giving. He currently specialises in charitable work related to the education sector in the UK. He also works as a freelance lexicographer on the Oxford English Dictionary. Prior to joining NPC, he worked in-house as an editor on the Oxford English Dictionary, and as a tutor in English language and literature at Oxford University. He has MA and M.Phil. degrees in English from Girton College, Cambridge.

While at Cambridge he was a news editor and writer on the student newspaper Varsity, and founding director of Cambridge’s first improvised theatre workshop. His first piece of short fiction was published in the 2006 Mays anthology of the best new writing from Oxford and Cambridge. He’s now involved in producing and performing in live comedy and theatre events in Oxford and London.
